Salvation Army now hosting after-school program

PUBLISHED: November 13, 2008

The Salvation Army has begun hosting an after school program for K-8 students in Washtenaw County and a community band program for Washtenaw County residents of all ages at the Ypsilanti Corps Community Center, located at 9 S. Park St.

The free after school program runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and will include:

  • A safe environment for children to do homework

  • Tutoring and help with homework

  • Educational materials

  • Recreation time

  • Snacks

  • Devotional, based on a "theme of the month" and including topics like peace, hope, a positive attitude, justice and equality.

The free community band program takes place 5 p.m. every Wednesday. Music theory lessons have been underway for the past few weeks, but residents of all ages are still encouraged to sign up for the program. The first initiative is to teach basic music lessons so that participants can begin to play instruments and understand how to read music by early next year.

The Salvation Army is seeking donations for the community band program, including trombones, cornets and baritones and mouthpieces for the instruments.

For more information or to donate an instrument or mouthpiece, please contact Michael Hulett at michael_hulett@usc.salvationarmy.org or 1-313-683-2090.

For information about volunteering or to make a donation to TSA-WC, visit www.sawashtenaw.org or call 1-734-668-8353.

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church dedicated to serving people in need without discrimination. Operating in Washtenaw County for more than 100 years, the non-profit addresses the physical and spiritual needs of the area through various programs and service centers located in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Essential services provided by TSA of Washtenaw County include a food pantry, soup kitchen, clothing, a family shelter, transitional housing and counseling for veterans, character building for youth, camp programs, emergency and disaster relief, utility assistance and eviction prevention.
