The Ypsilanti Township Board of Trustees gave preliminary approval for Parks and Recreation Director Art Serafinski to spend up to $100,000 on playground equipment for a township park.

Serafinski approached the Board with the idea for two reasons. One, residents living near Lake View park on Grove Road wanted new playground equipment; and two, he said he could get it for 60 percent off the retail price.
As an example, Serafisnki said he could possibly spend $59,000 on playground equipment running around $90,000 at retail price.
Serafinski said he could get an elaborate jungle gym from two manufacturers at an annual industry show in Indianapolis for the reduced price because he would be purchasing the demo model displayed at the show.
He said one Michigan based company that had demo models for sale would also throw in free delivery.
Most board members supported the idea despite the slow economy and tight township budget.
"I know we're trying to save money but this seems like a real good deal," Trustee Dee Sizemore said.
Serafinski said he hadn't worked out all the details yet but would get back to the board when he did.
