Senior center closing for repairs
PUBLISHED: September 27, 2007
The city of Ypsilanti Senior Center closed this week, but will reopen Oct. 22 according to Monica Prince, Senior Center coordinator. The Center serves around 120 senior citizens from Ypsilanti and the surrounding area.

For the first two weeks, seniors will miss out on meals, and activities such as aerobics, line dancing, Tae kwon do, strength training, bingo, and cards. From October 1 to 22, a limited number of programs will relocate to the Parkridge Center, located at 591 Armstrong Drive.
During this time, the city will be using money from a federal block grant to repair the roof, ceilings, replace the handicap bathrooms to meet city code and replace the windows. This is being done to make the building safer and less expensive to run.
According to Ms. Prince, the meal program is the most important to the seniors. For some seniors the meal they get at the Senior Center is their only hot meal of the day. The meals are supplied by the Brighton Washtenaw County Nutrition Program.
The Senior Center also provides other programs for senior citizens like having the kids from Chapelle School come and perform plays. Other times they have a massage therapist, or nurses come and give classes on taking care of yourself and cooking.
