The concert will be held 3:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the Towsley Auditorium of the Morris Lawrence Building on the campus of Washtenaw Community College. The orchestra will perform works by Brahms, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and African American composer William Grant Still.
Johnson, 22, has appeared as a soloist with the Detroit, Atlanta, Seattle, St. Louis, Cincinnati, New World and Baltimore symphonies, as well as the Boston Pops among others. He has also performed community engagements in schools and community centers both across the country and internationally.
Johnson had professed a dedication to introducing classical music to new and young audiences. He is known as an articulate, enthusiastic and creative communicator.
Also featured at the concert will be the Afro American Symphony by William Grant Still, which premiered in 1931. It is considered by some to be the first substantial work by a black composer to be performed by an American symphony orchestra. Its themes are reminiscent of Gershwin, American fork songs and jazz.
In addition, the YSO will perform Sibelius' Finlandia Overture and Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile. Tchaikovsky was also performed during the YSO's debut season.
Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at www.ypsilantisymphony.org. Prices are $10 adult, $5 senior (65-plus) or student (12 and under) or $25 for a family of four or more.
