As they arrived at the scene, officers observed the suspect, a 48-year-old man, repeatedly slamming the victim, an 18-year-old woman against the side of a house. As officers exited their vehicle, the suspect went into the house.
Officers began interviewing the victim, who said the man was her boyfriend and they had been arguing because he had taken her purse. The suspect then exited the house, saying the woman had fallen out of the window and he had been helping her up.
The victim stated as the argument over her purse escalated the suspect had pulled out a black-handled folding knife and threatened her at knifepoint, threatening her life. She was held at knifepoint for two hours before being able to escape through the window. Outside, the suspect had caught her and punched her in the face, hitting her and slamming her against the house.
The suspect was taken to the Ypsilanti Police Station and booked on charges of domestic violence, felonious assault and false imprisonment before being transported to the Washtenaw County Jail. The victim was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for treatment of injuries.
The Ypsilanti Fire Department responded to a call at 3:57 a.m. Monday to 858 Hill Street that required the recall of all off-duty personnel and the assistant of the Ypsilanti Township and Ann Arbor fire departments under the mutual aid pact.
Captain Dan Cain said the fire originated in a two-car garage on the property and had spread to the main structure, a duplex prior to the department's arrival. It also damaged a car in the driveway.
Six residents were displaced, with one suffering a minor leg injury as they fled the structure. The American Red Cross was called in to help the residents find shelter and food.
Cain said the fire was of a suspicious nature and was under investigation at press time. The estimated damage was around $25,000.
