SOS group to hold online auction

PUBLISHED: August 28, 2008

SOS Community Services will run an Empty Bowls online auction to benefit the Emergency Food Program.

The auction, which will run from Sep. 8 to Sep. 18, will feature work generously donated by local artists.

J.T. Abernathy, renowned local ceramicist, has donated six original pieces for the benefit. Kay Yourist of Yourist Pottery Studio donated a vessel. Jeri Hollister, member of the Ann Arbor Potters Guild, donated a shino pitcher. Susanne Stephenson of the Ann Arbor Potters Guild, also donated a signed vessel. John Albert Murphy donated a porcelain vessel. Alan Vigland, of the Vigland Gallery in Benzonia, donated a bowl. Annette Baron of Baron Glassworks created an original piece for the auction.

To bid on a piece, visit www.soscs.org/empty bowls.

This auction, a first of its kind for SOS Community Services, will help ensure the SOS Food Pantry remains stocked.

In the past, we responded to 40 requests on an average food delivery day, but in recent months, that number has doubled. But despite increased need, we've seen cuts in our government funding.

SOS Community Services is a lifeline of hope for homeless families in Washtenaw County. Last year, the SOS Emergency Food Pantry distributed food equivalent to more than 30,000 meals.

SOS provides comprehensive services for homeless families and children, including but not limited to temporary shelter and transitional housing, educational and employability support services, life skills training, parenting programs and play-groups, therapeutic child care and after-school programs. For more information about SOS Community Services, including opportunities to volunteer and donate, please visit www.soscs.org or call 485-8730.

The Empty Bowls Project was created in 1990 by a high school art teacher in Michigan to help his students raise money for a local food drive. The concept has since been used by artists worldwide to raise millions of dollars to fight hunger.
