Defeated officials announce write-in campaign

Jackson, Dew say negative campaigning hurt primary run

By Dave Wak, Special Writer

PUBLISHED: August 28, 2008

After being defeated in the August primaries, Augusta Twp. Supervisor Kathy Jackson and Treasurer Lynda Dew announced they will run in November on a write-in ticket.

Dew said in a press release that her and Jackson cannot stand by and let Township Clerk Kathy Giszczak Trustee Bill Tobler run the township. She said that she feared for the township's future.

Dew said her and Jackson were encouraged by many residents to run again in November.

She also said her team lost through a combination of overly negative campaigning by their opponents including literature which contained statements she called "outright lies."

Tobler countered that the negative campaigning Dew was referring to was a pamplet showing the public a series of four to three votes that showed Jackson and Dew had cost the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. He said the loses came through Jackson's mismanaging the utility department, bad deals with developers and legal fees by her refusal to fire controversial receptionist Jennifer Yancey.

Giszcak said it was fine if Jackson and Dew wanted to run again in November as long as they filed by the Oct. 24 dead line.

She said she was more mystified by Dew's statement about negative campaigning.

"We talked about the issues facing our community. Is that negative?" Giszczak said.

Dew said running, much less winning, a write-in campaign is extremely difficult but she and Jackson had to do it to maintain a 'high level of service' to residents.

Both Dew and Jackson have been highly critical of how Giszczak does her job since she took office in 2004. They said she often refuses certain residents and other township officials services based on personal vendettas.
