This event will commemorate YAM's 10 years of air shows in Michigan.
The show takes place on Saturday and Sunday at Willow Run Airport. According to event director Kevin Walsh, new features this year include paratroopers, a World War I dogfight, and the largest World War II Battle Reenactment ever staged in the U.S. Walsh, whose father put on air shows for 25 years, claims his job feels rewarding."There are many personal sacrifices and challenges in putting on an event of this magnitude, but there is also an incredible sense of accomplishment when it's all over," he said in an e-mail.
A press release for the show states that the Navy's F/A-18C Hornet and Air Force's F-16 "Viper: Single-Ship Tactical Demonstration teams will display extreme demos. The jets are expected to rip through the sky at 700 miles per hour - flirting with the speed of sound.Another new feature is this year's Flight-line Chalet. For $40 - if purchased at the show - people can view the show in a tented area close to the action. Children 15 years and younger have free access to the Chalet as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
This year's show not only includes airplanes, but a taste of Hollywood as well. Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey, star of the 1988 action film "Full Metal Jacket," will be present to sign autographs.
Although YAM shows are currently limited to Michigan, Walsh says they have expansion plans for the next few years. He looks forward to every show.
"Nothing - not Christmas, birthdays, or anything else - comes close to the excitement of these events," he stated in an e-mail.
Tickets for the Air Show run until Aug. 8. Further information can be found on www.YankeeAirMuseum.org.
