EMU Students to see tuition hike

Regents looking to fund capital projects, building improvements

By Christine Laughren, Staff Writer

Students attending Eastern Michigan University will see a 7.7 percent increase in tuition and fees as well as a housing and dining rate increases averaging 5.15 percent for the 2008-09 school year.

EMU's Board of Regents approved rate increases for the university's fiscal year 2008-09, $262.7 million budget at a regularly scheduled board meeting this morning.

The budget calls for nearly $24 million increase in Financial Aid and a $1.5 million increase in spending for building improvements and capital.

Major general fund projects this fiscal year include the renovation and expansion of Mark Jefferson as well as renovations to Pray-Harrold and the Hoyt Conference Center.

An allocation of 0.9 percent of the tuition and fee increases will be designated for infrastructure and building improvements, generating $1.5 million annually in additional funding. The remaining 6.8 percent of tuition increase is designated for operations.

The rise in housing and dining rates are attributed to the increased cost of energy, food and supplies. Some of the funds may also be allocated for future improvements to housing and dining at the university.

Like every major university in the state, EMU received a 1-percent increase in State Appropriations for the 2009-08 fiscal year. The average rate increase among all 15 of Michigan's state universities is approximately 7.1 percent.

"This is a challenging time in the state's future, but we are reinvesting in Eastern," EMU President Susan Martin said at the Regent's meeting.

Martin said she wants to help rebuild Michigan's economy and future by reinvesting in students at Eastern. She said hoped the 10 percent increase in Financial Aid would do exactly that.
