Hafler won nearly 54 percent of the vote (433 votes) to successfully unseat longtime Augusta political mainstay Kathy Jackson (370 votes), according to unofficial results posted by the Washtenaw County Clerk's office Wednesday morning.
Jackson was appointed to the supervisor's post in 2003 and then elected in 2004. Before that she served as a trustee from 2000 to 2003.
Hafler has never served in an elected position but said it was time for a change in Augusta Township, an area that has been plagued by controversy over the last several years. He has been a resident for more than 22 years and unsuccessfully ran against Jackson prior in the 2004 election.
While one controversial figure will be leaving her post after November, another was re-elected to her post as incumbent clerk Kathy Giszczak clinched with 58 percent of the vote (474 votes) over Tanya McCune who won 26.5 percent (219 votes). A third candidate, Robin Moore, won almost 15 percent.
Giszczak was elected clerk in 2004 and was often at odds with Supervisor Jackson over township and personal issues. The two were at the center of assault and kidnapping allegations last year when Giszczak accused Jackson's former secretary, Jennifer Yancey, of injuring her arm with a copy machine and holding her and another employee hostage.
In the race for Augusta Township treasurer, there was an incumbent upset as Lynda Dew was unseated by newcomer Angela Sherbine who won nearly 55 percent of the votes.
Dew served as deputy treasurer from 1996 to 1999, was appointed to trustee in 2001, then elected in 2004 and in July 2007 appointed treasurer.
There were six candidates running for four Democratic nods for Augusta Township trustee, and two running for the Republican ticket. Democrats John McGehee (23.66 percent), William Tobler (21.54 percent), Michael King (17.18 percent) and Daniel Lula (14.16) will face Republican winner Ronald Mortiere (55.94 percent) in the November general election.
