School board approves hirings for district
Principals for Adams and East Middle School hired

The Ypsilanti Public Schools Board of Education approved the hiring of three administrators and five teachers at its July 21 meeting.

Approved to fill the position of principal at Adams Elementary School was Connie A. Thomson, PhD. Thompson has been employed at YPSD since 2004 as a speech therapist. She received her doctorate from the University of Michigan
Approved to fill the position of principal of East Middle School was H. Candice Churchwell, who comes to the district from the Kent County Intermediate School District in Grand Rapids. She was principal of the Kent Transition Center there. Churchwell has a master's degree in educational leadership from Western Michigan University.
Approved for hire to fill the position of assistant principal at Ypsilanti High School was Charles L. Fuller. Fuller has been the physical education teacher at Estabrook Elementary School for the past seven years and served as assistant to Principal Jon Brown at the 2008 YPSD Summer School.
In addition, Fuller served as assistant varsity football coach at YHS from 1997 through 2005 and served as golf coach in the spring of this year. He has a master's degree from Wayne State University.
Also hired was Ms. Gina Wilson as math teacher in the Early College Alliance program. Wilson has a masters of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan and previously taught at Greenhills in Ann Arbor.
Ms. Tonia Porterfield was hired as science/social studies teacher at West Middle School. Porterfield is a recent Eastern Michigan University graduate and has worked as a paraprofessional in the district for 10 years.
Ms. Randee Bassin was hired as a speech therapist for the special education department. Bassin has a masters in arts degree from EMU in audiology and speech.
Ms. Dior McDaniel was hired as a speech pathologist for the district. McDaniel has a bachelor's degree in communication disorders from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in speech from Michigan State University.
Also hired was Master Sergeant John W. Guyer, Sr. to serve as second instructor in the ROTC program being started at YHS. Sgt. Guyer is retiring from the U. S. Air Force and moving his family to the area.
The board accepted the resignation of Delisa Brooks as the ninth grade transition coordinator at YHS. Brooks will join her husband in Homewood, Alabama, where he has found a job. Prior to her work at YHS, Brooks was a counselor at East Middle School.
The board approved the recommendation of non-renewal of contract for Evangeline Prosper due to Prosper's teaching certificate having lapsed. Prosper taught special education at YHS.
