A non-profit Housing Corporation in Ypsilanti Township has been awarded a $175,000 grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

The grant will be used by Community Housing Alternatives to assist five first-time homebuyers in Ypsilanti Township with the down payment and moderate rehabilitation of a newly purchased home.

Rhonda McGill, Executive Director of CHA, said in the past CHA has selected the, home rehabbed it and then looked for the buyer. She said that option is still available the grant gives the organization an opportunity to provide choice for prospective first-time purchasers.

"This is something that we have dreamed about for several years," McGill said. "I think this is a grand opportunity for us to be able to provide an array of housing options and choice to our community."

McGill said the grant is specific to the Sugarbrook neighborhood in Ypsilanti Township. She said the neighborhood watch in that area has wanted to increase home ownership as opposed to absentee landlords.

McGill said the grant would be a good way to ensure people invest in the community they live in.

"One of the clauses of the (grant) is that any home receiving aid is required to be the primary residence of the purchaser."

All buyers must be less than 80 percent of the area median income and have completed, or are able to complete pre-purchase homebuyer education classes.

If successful, CHA will seek additional funding in the fall.

"If we have a demand in Washtenaw County it makes our case stronger for funding," McGill said.

For more information about this and other housing opportunities available through CHA please call 482-3300.
