Ypsilanti Fire Chief Jon Ichesco has announced the rulings of the Ypsilanti Civil Service Commission that Max Anthouard be promoted to the position of captain, and Scott Maddison be promoted to the position of lieutenant with the Ypsilanti Fire department. Both men scored highest in tests for the respective positions.

Capt. Max Anthouard began his firefighting career in Paris, France, where he was a firefighter for 15 years. The Paris department, said Anthouard, has more personnel and is "made up of younger people."
His wife was from Ypsilanti, however, and they moved back here, where Anthouard was hired by the Ypsilanti department in 1994. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2001.
"I had to take all the basic classes again in firefighting and emergency medical service," Anthouard said. Now, he is a state instructor who oversees recertification classes for emergency medical technicians and is a local EMS coordinator. He has also received a commendation for implementing a lifesaving award.
In his new position, Anthouard will be overseeing maintenance and training firefighters, as well as working with programs that teach CPR and teach children how to react in an emergency. He is also working Eastern Michigan University, for which the department provides emergency response.
"We're short-staffed here," he said, "so everyone has to pitch in."
Lt. Scott Maddison began his firefight career in Pittsfield Township as a paid-on-call firefighter from 1992 to 1997. He joined the Ypsilanti department in 1996.
Like Anthouard, Maddison trained in basic firefighting and as an emergency medical technician. Since 2000, he's been a member of the Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials Response Team.
"We've been dealing with some changes here," Maddison said. "We've got a new chief and we've gone from 21 firefighters to 18. I decided to test for the promotion because it's a challenge to make everything work well for best results.
"We train a lot. We train outside and on the new tower truck. We have lots of instructors who constantly make sure we're the very best we can be. I hope to bring something to the team."
"These are two great guys who are dedicated fire safety experts," said Chief Ichesco. "They deserve to hold the positions they've achieved and I look forward to working with them."
