Nailbiter brings season to close

A 3-2 district loss ruins team's hopes

By Bruce Mason, Special Writer

PUBLISHED: June 7, 2007

Nobody expected it. Everyone wrote them off. But the Lincoln varsity baseball team turned heads this season and showed Coach Carlos Lozano how much heart they obtained.

The Railsplitters' season came to a close against cross-town rival Ypsilanti in the opening round of MHSAA districts in a 3-2 loss.

Andrew Dillon went 2-for-2 with a double and Michael Derry scored a run. Corey Kelch threw a complete game, striking out three batters, walking three while giving up six hits.

Lincoln (10-21-2) tied the game in the top of the seventh at 2, but in the bottom half of the seventh, the heart of the Ypsilanti batting order came up to the plate in the likes of Eastern Michigan bound batters Jacob Rhodes and Eric Noland.

Rhodes hit a fly ball and then reached second base on an error. Noland was intentional walked. And then Corey Reynolds hit a double off the wall to score Rhodes and end the game.

Lincoln assistant coach Carlos Lozano said their three big boys got up and that was all she wrote.

Earlier in the day, the head coach from Holly told Marty Lozano and Carlos Lozano that the Railsplitters were starting to scare them with their good play on the field. But in the end, Carlos Lozano said the "youth showed" in the loss.

"It was tough, it really was," he said. "We battled back. It just didn't fall our way."

Senior starters Kelch, Alex Aldridge and Robbie Whittenberg will be leaving, but a good core will return next season for Lincoln.

After the game, Carlos Lozano said the Railsplitters were disappointed and mad, but he told them they had no reasons to keep their heads down.

"Nobody even thought we'd be playing (against Ypsilanti)," Carlos Lozano said. "No one expected them to play like that, except us."
