That's how Ypsilanti varsity boys' track coach Torin Moore summed up the trip to Grand Rapids Forest Hills this past weekend for the MHSAA state tournament.
New kids came along for the ride, watched the action, got a sense of what it's like to run on the big stage, and talked about working hard to make a trip to the state finals in 2008. For instance, E.J. Wilson mentored younger runner Javon Green on the way home, telling him everything he needed to know about hurdling. And Moore discussed the upcoming season with a parent, as well.
Earning eight points for a 27th place finish out of 61 teams did not disappoint Moore.
"I was not disappointed at all," Moore said. "I knew we weren't going to win the darn thing. Nothing to be ashamed about."
Junior Marvon Sanders took second place in the long jump with a leap of 21-feet, 3-inches.
Moore played a guessing game with Sanders, and finished the conversation by saying, "You're all state, buddy."
As for the other Ypsilanti track athletes, Al Backe ran in the 400-M and took last in his heat. He then had to run with the 800-M relay team along with Wilson, Sanders and Taylor Moore.
"Al ran well," he said. "I didn't expect that from Al."
As for Dykes, Torin Moore said he has endured a "groin/hernia" problem that has accumulated over the last couple of weeks. He's been able to stretch off, but the minor pain in the abdominal section forced him out of the 800-M relay.
Earlier in the day, Dykes was able to compete on the 400-M relay team consisting of Taylor Moore, Wilson and Sanders, and they took 15th place.
