Errors spell the end to Willow Run's baseball post season

Varsity Flyers fall to Phoenix

By Dave Merchant, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: June 5, 2008

The Willow Run Flyers didn't have a lot working for them on Tuesday of last week when they battled Ypsilanti High in Division 2 pre-district action at Carleton Airport. The locals lost 14-0 in five innings.

Coach Jeff Edwards said it was an improvement over the last season when the opted out of post season play.

Justin Brewer got the win for the Ypsilanti Phoenix throwing a one-hitter. Tyler Hamill had the only hit for the Flyers.

"We made a lot of errors behind him (Hamill)," Edwards said. "We made nine errors behind him."

Willow Run bows out of the state tournament with a final record of 7-13. The team will lose only two seniors to graduation.

Prior to the Willow Run win, the varsity Phoenix had a tough week dropping two of three games.

On May 22 they lost to Truman 15-5. Kevin Osborne had two hits against the Cougars.

On May 21 Ypsilanti defeated Woodhaven 13-6.

Quetzalcoatl Carrasco pitched a complete game and took the win on the mound. He also helped himself at the plate with three hits, a double, triple and two RBI. Clyde Gentry had two hits and one RBI and Justin Krakowski had two hits.

Ypsilanti lost a close one on May 19 to Redford Union falling 5-4. Krakowski had three hits and Osborne had two hits including one double.

Prior to district play on Saturday Ypsilanti was 10-17 overall and they finished 5-6 in the Mega White.
