The eighth time in a row was a charm for the Ypsilanti girls' track team.

Ypsilanti High girls' track coach Tom Micallef says he's seen it all as a long-time coach of the sport.
And now he has seen eight consecutive regional championships.
Kyra Caldwell led the way for Ypsilanti at Linden High School Saturday as she won the 110-M hurdles (14.85), 100-M dash (12.72), and 300-M hurdles (45.12).
"There's your highlight reel," said Micallef, laughing. "Good kid, too. Hard worker. Solid citizen-type kid."
Caldwell, along with Shameka Hamilton, Symone Williams, Talesia Francois, placed second in the 1,600-meter relay with a finishing time of 4:09.30.
The Barves finished the day with 113 points. Tecumseh was right behind with 106.
"Very close meet," Micallef said. "Back and forth most of the day. We were able to just kind of swing our lineup a little bit."
Micallef said that since his team cannot score in the pole vault and distance events, he had to download some of the relays.
And it worked.
"We didn't know if we could win or not," he said. "We gambled and our gambles came out pretty good. We played our cards pretty good."
These days, it's getting harder and harder for Micallef to field a team. Ypsilanti high school is shrinking. What once was a 2,400 student enrollment has dwindled to around 1,000, or so.
He's been around a long time, and "seen it all," but he will not take it for granted.
And that's one of the reasons why he was proud of the kids.
"It's a team effort," Micallef said. "They wanted to retain that title and they worked hard enough to do it. I was happy of the kids."
