"We're excited about being a part of establishing a summer venue," said the orchestra's music director, Adam Riccinto.
The theme of the concert is "Ypsi Pops! A Tribute to the Americas" and will include patriotic pieces, Sousa marches, American folks songs and military music. Food and drinks will be available for sale, provided by Jerry Carpenter, owner of Cady's Grill.
Patrons are asked to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs. In case of rain, the performance will be held Sunday.
While the orchestra does a "pops" concert every year, this is the first time it will be done outdoors, Riccinto said.
The event is sponsored by the Depot Town CDC, the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission and Target stores. It is the first of eight concerts that will be held either at Riverside Park or its neighbor, Frog Island.
"As the director of the CDC, I'm very excited about this inaugural year working with the parks," said Eric Dotzauer. "We're fortunate to have the sponsors working in partnership with us in bringing these musical evenings to the community. I really hope to expand these events in coming years."
In addition to this Saturday's concert by the YSO, the Washtenaw Community College Jazz Band will perform at series of concert at the Frog Island Amphitheater on Wednesday evenings from June 4 through July 9 at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, July 15, the Ypsilanti Community Band will perform at the Riverside Park Pavilion beginning at 7:30 p.m.
