Ypsilanti varsity boys' track coach Torin Moore plays it every week.
With Class A regionals on Saturday at Linden, Moore continues to find a talented athlete pop up out of nowhere. As a result, he has rewritten his regional track list five times.
The regionals require two automatic participants in every event. But the problem for Moore is this: if he wants to add a third, or more, they have to hit certain marks. For example, in the long jump event, he has three guys who can hit 19-feet-6-inches or further.
The hidden talent that he continues to find has presented a nice problem.
"(It's) all about scoring and who can I bring," Moore said. "You're also trying to score for the state meet."
On May 8, Ypsilanti defeated Taylor Kennedy, 112-25.
Which Ypsilanti runners did well?
"Who didn't?" said Moore chuckling, before rattling off a laundry list of winners.
Marvon Sanders leaped 20-feet, 10 and a half inches in the long jump. Al Backey ran the 1600 meters in 5:11, and then ran the 400 meters in 52.6 seconds, a mark good enough to qualify for regionals.
The 4 by 100 meters relay team consisting of Taylor Moore, E.J.Wilson, Sanders and Martez Dykes ran a time of 45 seconds.
Jeremiah Turman (43.3 seconds) and Wilson (45.1 seconds) finished first and second, respectively, in the 300 meters hurdles.
Kevin Atkins won the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 8-inches.
Cameron Simmons took first place in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:50. In the 800 meters Kyle Woodyard (2:13) took first, Taylor Sylvester (2:15) second place, and Brandon Russell (2:17) third place.
Dykes won the 100 meters (11.2) seconds.
Ypsilanti will compete with 12 teams at the regionals, and Moore was asked if it is his to win.
"When they asked me this last year, yes it was," he said. "This year, it's up for grabs. I'm confident we can win it. I'm never going to a track meet and don't think we can win it.
If we don't, I'll be shocked, and if we do, that what we expect."
