Once again the Railsplitters brushed away local competition with an 83.5 to 53.5 win over Dexter last Tuesday, then turned in a third place finish against some of Michigan's best at the Jackson relays on Saturday.
With regional competition on Friday, head coach Chaba Kovacs is having his girls brush up and rest up for the meet that will determine who goes to the state meet.
"The season turned out the way I thought it would," Kovacs said. "Now we have to keep Noriah Williams healthy and make sure we're running as fast as we have been on Friday."
The Splitters are in second place behind Chelsea in the Southeastern Conference's White division, but a strong showing at the league meet on Wednesday could catapult Lincoln into first place.
If the Dexter performance is an indicator, the Railsplitters are poised to do just that.
Showing the depth of their sprinters, Lincoln swept the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
"That was big. That's pretty much where we won the meet," Kovacs said.
Felicia Jefferson (12.7), Alicia Jefferson (13.0) and Ashley Betts (13.1) took the top spots in the 100.
Alicia Jefferson, Megan Marchildon and Shaunda Wysche finished one two and three respectively in the 200.
"Shaunda has been running really well lately," Kovacs said of the freshman sprinter.
Noriah Williams (60.1) and Felicia Jefferson (61.8) claimed the top two spots in the 400 meter dash.
Williams, who is one of the team's fastest girls, has been battling an injury and will rest all week with the hope that she'll be 100 percent for the regionals. Her absence would be a severe blow to the Splitters' hopes of sending several relay teams to the states, and Kovacs said it is questionable whether or not she will be able to additionally run personal events.
Williams also posted a personal best of 25.6 in the 200 at the Jackson relays.
"That probably puts her in the top five in the state," Kovacs said. "She is one of the state's elite runners, but she just needs to stay healthy."
The 4 X 2 relay team - F. Jefferson, Williams, Marchildon and Crystal Washington - turned in a time of 145.7 in Jackson.
"If we run that time on Friday, then we're in the state meet," Kovacs said.
Kovacs is also hopeful the 4 X 1, comprised of the Jefferson sisters ,Ebony Johnson and Betts, can bring their time of 50.4 from this weekend down slightly to qualify for states.
"We have a couple days to refine a few things, so I think we'll be good," he said.
