Varsity softball improves to 7-9

Softball was like a roller coaster ride last week for the Ypsilanti Lincoln Rails. It was an up and down affair.

On April 30, the Railsplitters dropped a doubleheader to Ann Arbor Pioneer. In the first game, Pioneer won 14-3.
Pioneer's Katie Martin struck out eight batters and held Lincoln to just five hits in the game. Only a few players managed hits for Lincoln. Senior Amy Sirois went 3-for-3. Both Julie Strimpel and Chelsea Solvinski had one hit each.
Pioneer won the second game by the tune of 14-3 as well. Sirois, Strimpel, Solvinski, senior Meghan Deane and juniors Jamie Lavery and Jackie Vallance each had single hits.
Lincoln was plagued by errors in each game. Six in the first game, nine in the second game.
"We had a really bad time," Lincoln Coach Karen Sexsmith said. "I don't know what the deal was. They're just as evenly matched as we are. We should've split. We should have won one and just didn't do it."
The Railsplitters swept a doubleheader against Willow Run on May 2. In the first game, Lincoln won 5-2. Solvinski was 3-for-3. Vallance and freshman Danielle Lauth both went 2-for-3.
Deane earned the win on the hill, striking out two batters while holding Willow Run to just five hits.
In game two, Lincoln won 13-5. Solvinski went 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs, Strimpel 3-for-3, Lavery 2-for-4 and senior Leah Sykes 2-for-2.
On May 3, Lincoln lost a doubleheader to Chelsea.
Lincoln lost the first game 11-3. Strimpel and Solvinski each went 3-3.
In the second game the Rails fell 8-3. Vallance was 1-for-3, Pagareski was 1-for-3 and sophomore Barbara Hubbard was 2-for-3.
On May 5, Lincoln competed at the Columbia Central Tournament. In the first game they fell 14-8 loss to Columbia Central. Hubbard was 2-for-3 and Sirois 2-for-4.
Lincoln beat Jonesville, 14- 4, in its second game. Sirois and Hubbard went 3-for-3 and Vallance was 2-4.
Then Lincoln beat Hanover Horton, 8-7. Solvinski was 3-for-3, Deane 2-for-3, Strimpel 2-for-4.
