Belleville man faces rape charges
PUBLISHED: May 10, 2007
YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP - A Belleville man who investigators have linked to at least a dozen, alleged sexual assaults over several months, is now behind bars.
Richard Keith Doty, 42, was arrested last week and is facing multiple charges stemming from his alleged rape of a 47-year-old Detroit woman. Doty was arraigned Friday on two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, one count of unlawful confinement, and one count of felonious assault.
According to a press release, investigators believe that Doty solicited the victim in Detroit on May 7, then bound her up and transported her to a secluded area, near the GM Hydramatic Plant in eastern Ypsilanti Township, where he brutally sexually assaulted her while using a weapon. Doty then released her and she contacted police, the release stated.
Cmdr. Dave Egeler, from Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department, said they have received numerous 911 calls from victims claiming they had been raped. Egeler said most of the victims fled the area before deputies arrived.
"Most of these victims are prostitutes," Egeler said. "Some of them might have had warrants out, others might have gotten nervous while they waited for police."
Egeler said they believe that Doty is responsible for these incidents.
Investigators are urging other victims or anyone with information to come forward. The sheriff's tip line is 1-734-973-7711.
