SUPER SPRINTER

Splitters easily beat Maples

By Tom Perkins, Special Writer

PUBLISHED: May 8, 2008

Beating the Lincoln girls' track team is a tough assignment for just about any school in the area, but when they're not providing runners in some events, a blow out is guaranteed.

The Railsplitters traveled to Adrian last Tuesday where they took first place in most of the events in which the Maples did provide competition, so with a few freebies thrown in, Lincoln cruised to a 89-48 win.

"We ran well for what we had to do," head coach Chaba Kovacs said. "But if you're not going to be contested in three relay events, then you don't have to worry too much."

Kovacs said he was pleased to see his freshmen distance runners, Allie Hadley and Alexa Geider, turn in solid times of 6:12 and 6:17 respectively.

"They keep improving and they didn't really have anybody pushing them this time, so they were good times," Kovacs said.

Elizabeth Little had her strongest showing of the year in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.9, and Crystal Washington took first place in the 300 hurdles with a solid time of 50.7.

Twin sisters Felicia and Alicia Jefferson claimed first and second place in the 200-meter dash with times of 27.2 and 27.7 respectively.

"That's the first time I had them both do it in one meet, and they did real well," Kovacs said.

Lincoln cleaned up in the field events, but it was the performance of sophomore Somer Walker, who threw a personal best of 34' 6" in the shot put and a 103' 6" in the discus, that stood out.

"That was the big performance of the day," Kovacs said.

The win puts the Railsplitters at 4-1 and Kovacs said he likes the teams' prospects for claiming a division title. He said they must win all their remaining meets, and this week Lincoln continues their efforts at Dexter.
