KENNETH EARL LOVEJOY
Ypsilanti
Kenneth Earl Lovejoy, 80, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on May 3. He was born June 30, 1927 in Allen, W. Va., the son of Clarence Delmar and Martha Jane (Cummings) Lovejoy.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. On Nov. 22, 1949, he married his sweetheart, Loretta Jean McCoy in Greenup, Ky. and she survives.
In 1953, Earl was recruited out of the coal mines of West Virginia to work for Ford Motor Company at the Rouge Frame Plant in Dearborn. He later worked at the Ypsilanti Plant, from where he retired in 1993 after 40 years with Ford and as a proud U.A.W. Local 849 member.
He loved going to church and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he had many friends in Christ.
There was nothing that gave him more pleasure than going back home to the mountains of West Virginia. He was an avid reader, especially of the Bible and loved discussing politics, economics and religion.
Earl enjoyed taking his grandchildren out to eat, traveling with his family, working in his yard and garden, taking care of his many vehicles and driving his Ford tractor.
Earl was the beloved father of four children: Kenneth Earl Jr., Karen (Rick) Roe, Kevin (Sharon Sorrell) and Keith (Kay Stubbs). Twenty-three grandchildren will greatly miss their "Pappa:" Eric (Lyndsey), Kraig (Alicia), Kristopher (Julia), Aaron (April), Emily, Jonathan, Stephen, Benjamin, David, Nicholas, Michael, Joshua, Ruth, Luke, Adam, Clara and Karly Lovejoy, Meaghan (Justin) Ownby and Richard, Jessie, Rachel, Sarah and Hannah Roe; also four great grandchildren: Kristian, Kyler, Karson and Addison Lovejoy.
Surviving are his wonderful sisters and their families, Irma Spurlock, Ruby (Charles) Brunty and Merlene (Jack) Sizemore and his brother and sister-in-laws and families, Dovetta Browning, Edward and Jean McCoy and Ralph and Violet McCoy. Surviving are also many Cummings and Lovejoy family members who Earl dearly cherished. Preceding him in death are sisters, Betty and Ruth (Carper) Lovejoy and brother and sister-in-laws, Ernest and Pam McCoy, Cecil and Ernestine McCoy, Damon Spurlock and Carson Browning.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church Missions Fund, 6538 Rawsonville Road, Belleville, MI 48111.
The Homecoming Service was held Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Antioch Baptist Church, 6538 Rawsonville Road, Belleville with Pastor Kevin Lovejoy officiating.
Burial will be in Lovejoy Cemetery in Palermo, W. Va. Arrangements by Stark Funeral Service Moore Memorial Chapel. Please sign his guest book at www.starkfuneral.com.
