Lincoln drops doubleheader

Errors hindering team's performance

By Bruce Mason, Special Writer

PUBLISHED: May 3, 2007

Lincoln softball came up short April 23 at Pinckney, and was swept in its doubleheader.

In the first game, the Railsplitters lost, 15-0, in a three-inning mercy.

Meghan Deane pitched three innings and gave up just two earned runs. Barbara Hubbard and Jessica Pegaraski each had a base hit.

In the second game, they lost, 13-3. Ashley Fife pitched two innings, but only five runs scored on her were earned. Chelsea Solvinski was 2-for-3 and Amy Sirois also recorded a hit.

The problem was errors; six in the first game and eight in the second game.

Lincoln Coach Karen Sexsmith agreed it kind of hurts to see as many errors as her team committed "especially when you're pitcher is doing so well," she said.

The Railsplitters (3-5) faced Ann Arbor Pioneer on Monday and on Wednesday they played Willow Run. Today it's Chelsea, and on Saturday they'll travel to Napoleon for the Columbia Central Tournament.

This past weekend, the Railsplitters were scheduled to play in the Rotunda Tournament in Dearborn, but officials called Sexsmith on Friday, telling her the rain-soaked fields would not be ready in time for action.

The tournament was moved to May 12, but since most of the Railsplitters will be at prom that day, the likelihood of competing is not good.

That means the one-hour drive to Napoleon for the Columbia Central Tournament will likely be the last of the season for Sexsmith.

In the meantime, she is starting to videotape her players to see what they're doing wrong at the plate. It has already worked on Julie Strimpel, who corrected a hitch in her swing.

Sexsmith knows hitting is crucial, especially if errors persist.

"Our players just got to back our pitchers," she said. "We just don't have the defense backing them up. No hitting to cover up the mistakes."
