Matched up against top talent at the Jackson Invitational on Friday, Ypsilanti varsity boys' track took sixth place out of a nine-team field.

Among the heavyweight contenders - as described by Ypsilanti coach Torin Moore - were East Kentwood (tournament champion) Jackson, Grand Blanc and East Lansing.
Ypsilanti junior Marvon Sanders took first place in the long jump, while junior Martez Dykes took fifth-place in the 100-meter run, and senior Taylor Moore and Sanders made the top six in the 200 meters.
The 4 by 100-meter relay team of Moore, Sanders, Dykes and junior E.J. Wilson took third place overall.
After running so well the previous week, and posting a time better than last season, Moore said he was not surprised the relay team did not take first place.
"This meet was designed to put us back in check," he said. "to prove that we could be defeated."
Moore said he is not worried, however, and believes his team will continue to improve.
Freshman Kyle Woodyard took fourth place in the 80 meters on Friday.
"And one of the guys he beat has a ring on his finger," Moore said.
That would be junior Cameron Simmons, whose brother C.J. was in attendance, and not too pleased with how his fellow sibling ran. C.J. Simmons graduated last year from Ypsilanti high school, and won a ring as a state champion.
C.J. had a message for the track team.
"He said, 'Y'all never be like us,'" Moore said. "He put a little seed in them, which is good."
Meanwhile, the Ypsilanti track team said, "wait until the time comes," and Moore said there always is something that clicks before his athletes shift into the next gear. He cannot find it for them, they have to find it on their own.
"I'm more confident in the team state meet," Moore said. "I figure were won two last year, as least try to get one this year."
