Senior wins skills competition: YHS senior Emanuel Gombos, won the state Skills USA Construction competition that took place in Lansing April 18 and 19. There were approximately 19 competitors in the category and he outdistanced the second place winner by 90 points. Emanuel will go on to the National Competition that will take place in June in Kansas City.

Program to be presented today: Sweet Dreamzzz of Detroit will present an educational and fun program for students at Adams Academy May 1, which is designed to teach students the importance of obtaining a good night's rest. Students and staff are encouraged to wear pajamas and slippers while they learn about the importance of sleep.
Sweet Dreamzzz, a nonprofit organization, will provide bed time essentials for students that include a sleeping bag, night shirt, toothpaste, toothbrush and a stuffed animal. The Ypsilanti Teen Chapter of Jack and Jill of America will assemble the materials prior to the visit.
Flag courtesy of 177th Brigade: The U.S. Flag that is currently being flown at East Middle School is complements of the 177th Military Police Brigade.
The flag was a gift to the staff and students who shipped supplies to the unit who are currently serving in Iraq. A certificate accompanying the flag indicated that the flag had been flown in Iraq in honor of the support they received from East Middle School.
Sun comes out for "Annie." Erickson Elementary School presents selections and scenes from the hit Broadway musical "Annie" 7:30 p.m. April 29 and 30 at Ypsilanti High School, 2095 Packard. Students in grades 3 through 5 will act, sing, dance and perform gymnastics to the music of Martin Charnin and Charles Strouse. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 714-1625YHS senior performs: Ypsilanti High School senior and violinist Camille Jones will perform with the Ypsilanti Youth Orchestra 3 p.m. May 4 at the high school, 2095 Packard Rd., when the group performs "Hip Hop Joins the Classics." The musical program will mesh classical concertos with the music of today's youth. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 483-6079.
Essay contest winners to visit museum: Approximately 50 first place winners of the Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest will travel April 30 to Detroit to visit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Annually the top winners of the contest are treated to a special outing to reward them for their outstanding efforts. One of the highlights of the visit will include a guided tour of the "And Still We Rise." This exhibit chronicles life from pre-historic Africa through the rise of ancient civilizations, to slavery, the Underground Railroad and concludes with modern history makers. Science Exploration for students: Second-grade students at Estabrook Elementary were treated to the wonders of nature during two scheduled visits to the Leslie Science Nature Center in Ann Arbor. The field trips were made possible through a Pfizer Community Grant.
Two of the classes visited the center April 16 and the other two second grade classes visited April 25. Experts from the Leslie Science Nature Center also came to the classes earlier in the year to provide introductory biology lessons.
