The Arvin golf outing began six years ago by the Capt. C. Robert Arvin Veterans of Foreign Wars Ypsilanti Post no. 2408.
With the support of the Arvin VFW Post, the Arvin Committee and the entire Ypsilanti area community, last year raised $11,000 and awarded scholarships to 12 deserving graduates from the high schools in the Ypsilanti area.
This event is named for dedicated Ypsilanti resident Bob Arvin, who had a lot of accomplishments in his short 24 years.
A 1961 graduate of Ypsilanti High School, Arvin was an Eagle Boy Scout, the lead in the school play, class president, student council president, captain of the football and wrestling teams, state champion wrestler, (leading the team to a State Championship) class valedictorians.
Arvin moved on to the West Point Military Academy after graduating from high school. While there, he continued to make the Ypsilanti area proud wrestling throughout four years and was captain of the West Point team.
He graduated 44th out of a class of 596. He won many competitions at West Point in military efficiency, hand-to-hand combat and leadership. He was cadet first captain and brigade commander, the equivalent of being president of the West Point student body.
After graduating from West Point, he served as a military advisor in Vietnam. In 1967 while on patrol, he was killed in an ambush. He was a decorated war hero and was buried at West Point.
In 1989, West Point dedicated their gymnasium in honor of Arvin and in 2005, after many changes and modifications rededicated the building now called the Arvin Cadet Military Development Center.
In 2002, the Ypsilanti VFW dedicated their post in his memory. In 2005, he was inducted into the Ypsilanti High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Many residents remember Arvin fondly. He displayed character and integrity and he could relate with all ages and converse with anyone, according to officials at the VFW hall.
There was a special quality that was recognized and admired. Officials said they knew he would go on to great things.
The scholarship money raised goes to the young people of Ypsilanti who have displayed the many characteristics and qualities of Arvin: Leadership, academics, athletics, community service, volunteerism and patriotism.
The 2006 scholarship competition drew an impressive 37 applicants from the four area high schools and Washtenaw Technical Middle College seniors. The counseling and administrative staffs at the respective schools were showed support and encouraged students to apply. Their cooperation was a major reason for this year's successful scholarship competition. The quality of the applicants was incredible. The Arvin Committee is looking to increase last year's record award of $11,000.
