By Dave Merchant, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: April 24, 2008

The Ypsilanti Phoenix baseball team played some very competitive ball last week and came out of league play winning two of three games.

On April 14 the locals opened the season with a 5-3 win over league rival Lincoln Park. Justin Brewer got the win on the hill going seven innings and giving up seven hits and striking out seven Rail batters. He walked four and only allowed one walk.

Kevin Osborne was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Nigel Harris knocked in two RBI as well.

Last Wednesday the Phoenix slipped past the Carlson Marauders 4-3. Osborne had the big stick two RBI and he also got the win on the hill.

"Adam Wilbanks pitched a solid four and two third innings," Ypsilanti Coach Terry Bigham said. "He only gave up two earned runs."

On Friday, the league action got tougher as Ypsilanti fell 5-3 to the Roosevelt Bears. Brewer was not involved in the decision but he went six and one-third innings allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out six Bears.

Craig Swope took the loss. Osborne was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Brewer had two hits.

At the Grass Lake Tournament on Saturday the locals went 0-2. In the first game they lost 7-2 to Bedford. Wilbanks took the loss and Osborne had the team's only hit.

The second game was closer but the result was a 3-2 loss to North Adams. Quetzalcoatl Carrasco took the loss going five innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Osborne was 2-for-3 at the plate and Carrasco and Brewer each had one RBI.

Ypsilanti is 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the Mega White.
