It is disappointing that Kiwanis cannot honor all of the deserving nominees equally. It is rewarding that we can honor one of the many who deserve recognition.
Mounica is a junior at the University of Michigan and a graduate of Huron High School in Ann Arbor. She started her volunteer efforts at Hope Clinic in Ypsilanti when she was a freshman. She then was instrumental in organizing University of Michigan students for volunteer service at Hope Clinic and in a broader community. To do this, she conceived and launched Volunteers In Every Week to address the volunteer need of nonprofits.
Through VIEW, students receive advance orientation about the importance of making and keeping service commitments, thus reducing turnover and greatly increasing the value of service to the receiving organizations.
In addition to her volunteer work at Hope Clinic, Mounica is a volunteer Crisis Counselor where she aids shelter residents and assists shelter staff. She also is a member of the American Red Cross Club where she organizes club members to volunteer in the community and, being CPR/FA and EMT certified, is a First Responder at University of Michigan sporting events.
Mounica's award was presented during a luncheon on April 16. After graduation, Mounica plans to attend medical school.
