Dion Dargin of Detroit, Angela Palaian of Farmington Hills and Angela Arnold of Waterford were recognized April 11 during the Detroit Pistons halftime show as the grand-prize winners of the "Education First Merit Scholarship Essay."
More than 190 high school juniors and seniors, as well as transfer students participated in the essay contest, sponsored by EMU, the Detroit Pistons, The Ann Arbor News and MLive. com.
Dargin's essay was named Best of Show. He was also presented a framed, autographed Pistons jersey and a tour of The Palace and Pistons locker room.
Ted Coutilish, associate vice president in the office of marketing and communications at EMU said Dargin, a senior at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, wrote a "touching story" about how he has overcome great obstacles to do well in school and how his mother has influenced him.
Palaian is a transfer student from Adrian College, and Arnold is a junior at Waterford Mott High School.
The three winners attended the April 11 game against the Washington Wizards and saw their names on the scoreboard.
Coutilish said all of the essays were well written and EMU looks forward to continuing the contest at this fall's Explore Eastern.
"We're glad to see students put education first," Coutilish said.
