Ypsilanti Board of Education members discussed recent vacancies Monday after two school board trustees announced their resignations last week.

The meeting began with President Floyd Brumfield nominating Trustee Tom Reiber for vice president, a position left vacant by the resignation of Amy Doyle.
Trustees David Bates and Andrew Fanta objected to the action, saying they would prefer the two vacancies left by Doyle, and former trustee Cameron Getto, be filled before a vice president was chosen.
The vote went forward when Trustee Linda Horne seconded Reiber's nomination. Reiber was elected on a 3 to 2 vote, with Brumfield, Horne and Reiber, himself, prevailing.
The board then discussed the procedures needed for filling the vacancies. The vacancies must be filled within 30 days of the receipt of the resignations, which means the appointments must be made before May 6.
It was agreed that Letters of Intent from citizens requesting appointment to the board would be received until 4 p.m. on April 25. A meeting will then be held on April 30, at which the candidates will be asked a give a brief biographical sketch of themselves and outline why they would like to be considered for a position.
Following that, the board will interview candidates. The same questions will be asked of each candidate and the questions will be given to the candidates ahead of time so they can prepare.
Depending on the number of candidates, the selection process is tentatively scheduled to continue on the night of May 1.
After the interviews, the board will discuss, in open session, the merits of the various candidates and decide on who will be appointed.
