The Ypsilanti High girls' soccer season got underway this week with three tough matches. Phoenix Coach Nicole Allen is excited about her second year of coaching.

"We have about 20 to 22 girls out for the team," Allen said. "There are a good number of freshmen on the team this season."
The lone senior on the team is outside player Olivia Banks. Three key sophomore players for the team this season are forward Keri Sylvester, forward Liz Herring and defenseman Bridgette Rudolph. The keeper on the team this season is sophomore Travalia Bryant.
"We are very young this season," she said. "Last year finished third in our league and lost in the first game of districts to Dexter."
Allen said one of the toughest teams in the Mega Blue is Kennedy (which they played yesterday). On Monday they played Lincoln Park and tomorrow they play at Melvindale.
Two of the team's non-conference games will be against Ypsilanti Calvary Christian.
Allen said her ultimate goal is to get back to having a junior varsity and varsity team.
"It is nice to have a young team and see who is leading on the team," she said. "You know you will have them back next year and you know who you will have to work with."
