Arvin Foundation now a non profit

PUBLISHED: April 10, 2008

The Captain C. Robert Arvin Foundation, named for a highly decorated Vietnam war hero, has been restructured as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization to add stability and longevity to the philanthropic initiative.

The vision for the foundation was formulated following the renaming in 2002 of the VFW Post 2408 in honor of the fallen officer who also was an Ypsilanti High School and West Point Alumni. Since 2005, the foundation has granted college scholarships to Ypsilanti public and private school students. Local attorney Thomas Manchester prepared the documents for the reorganization of the foundation.

"The Arvin Foundation has been operating as a non-profit and taking this new tax exempt step will establish a firm structure to receive and administer funds to honor the legacy of Capt. Arvin," Manchester said. "The organizers behind the foundation wanted to ensure that the memory of Bob Arvin would continue to be honored through the awarding of scholarships to promising young people."

In addition to recognizing academic excellence, the scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who show a propensity for developing as leaders and who provide service to the community, as exemplified by the late Capt. Arvin.

The scholarship is currently funded primarily through an annual spring golf outing and summer banquet. The golf event is May 12 at the Washtenaw County Country Club in Ypsilanti and support ranges from $100 hole sponsors to $400 golf dinner sponsorships. The June 27 Awards for Excellence dinner at Washtenaw County Country Club features a variety of sponsorship levels from $100 to $1,000. Since 2004, the foundation has awarded more than $34,000 in scholarships to 34 high school seniors.

The guest speaker for the June banquet is retired Lt. General Daniel Christman. The general was a West Point classmate and friend of the late Capt. Arvin. His presence will bring a personal touch to the annual dinner that will award the scholarships and continue to remember the exemplary leadership of C. Robert Arvin.

Christman is currently the senior vice president of international affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and previously served as superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, was assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and has been a member of NATO's Military Committee in Belgium.
