That's how close Ypsilanti wrestler Chris Harris came from earning all-state honors at The Palace of Auburn Hill among Division 2 wrestlers last year.
It was his junior season. He finished 1-2 at the state finals. He then watched eight wrestlers from various high schools receive medals as state finalists.
Fast forward to March 10, Harris finished 3-2 in his 135 pound weight class. He received a fourth-place state finalist medal and then marches around The Palace as several thousand spectators applaud his wonderful achievements.
"It was a great experience," Harris said. "Looking up and seeing all the people cheering for us and everything."
Harris lost both matches to Zach Carr of Mt. Pleasant. After getting pinned at 4:48, Harris battled Carr in the third-place match, but fell short in a 7-5 decision.
"I think I could've done better," he said. "But placing fourth in the state is a pretty good job, anyways."
Harris credits the help of coaches Claudell Ruffin and James Kelly for his success.
Ruffin helped him stay focused, while Kelly, a personal trainer, kept him in shape with running and various conditioning techniques.
Harris said he'll miss high school wrestling, but looks forward to action on the collegiate level. He's currently undecided about which school he will attend, but will make a decision "in a little while."
Some of his choices, to name a few, are Wabash, Eastern Michigan and Olivet among others.
The fact of the matter is that his university of choice will receive someone who loves the competition, excitement and thrill of wrestling.
