Police Blotter

PUBLISHED: April 3, 2008

Ypsilanti police were called to the 500 block of Congress at 2:10 a.m. on March 29, on a report of a fight in progress. Upon arriving, they witnessed the victim yelling at the suspect for attempting to steal his watch and wallet.

The officers observed the victim had a golf-ball sized knot on his head and cuts to both arms. He told officers the suspect had assisted him with his vehicle, which was in the roadway. When he attempted to give the suspect money for his aid, the suspect attacked him, pulling his watch from his arm and taking his wallet.

The victim called to a friend in the vehicle, who came to his aid. The victim got his watch back. His wallet was found in the street. Officers searched the suspect and found the victim's cell phone on his person.

The victim was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The suspect was taken to jail.

Also at 2:10 a.m. March 29, Ypsilanti police were called to City Lot No. 2 at the intersection of Pearl and Adams streets on a report of a purse-snatching.

The female victim said she and her female friend had been walking to their vehicle when a man ran up to her, pushed her to the ground and grabbed her purse. She attempted to resist and was pushed to the ground again before the suspect fled.

The victim and her friend gave chase, but the suspect outran them.

Officers Joshua Lawther and Uriah Hamilton were in the vicinity and observed a male juvenile who matched the description given by the victim. After he was detained, the victim identified him as her attacker.

The suspect was searched and the victim's credit cards were found on his person. He was lodged at the Washtenaw County Juvenile Facility.

Another strong-arm robbery

Ypsilanti police responded to the area of Hawkins Street and W. Michigan Avenue at 5:22 p.m. on March 29, on a complaint of a strong-arm robbery.

The victim said he had been walking in the area when he was approached by a woman and her son who were known to him. The son punched the victim in the head, while the mother went through his pockets, taking $30.

The victim said the suspects lived on Ainsworth Street. Officers went to the address and made contact with the suspects, who denied involvement in any such activity as the suspect described. The mother said she thought the accusation was in retaliation for her interference in a relationship the victim had with another woman. Investigation into the allegations continues.

Drug possession

The Ypsilanti Neighborhood Policing Team, comprised of officers Zachary Allen and Bradley Compton, were on patrol at 11:35 p.m. on March 29, when they pulled into the parking lot of Brandy's Liquor Shoppe, 902 W. Michigan Ave. They observed two suspects who, after seeing the patrol vehicle, attempted to hide behind a fence.

Upon making contact with the suspects, the officers were patting down one man when it was observed that he had a small plastic bag in his mouth. The suspect broke away and fled on foot. He was recaptured after a short foot chase and found to be in possession of one rock of crack cocaine.

The second suspect was found to have five rocks of crack cocaine and a baggie of marijuana on his person. Both suspects were arrested.

First degree child abuse

Ypsilanti police were dispatched to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital March 30, upon a report by hospital personnel of suspicious injuries to a baby. The eight-week-old female infant had sustained a skull fracture and bruising to both arms.

The mother of the child informed officers that her boyfriend had been babysitting the infant while she was at work.

The suspect boyfriend voluntarily went to the police station for an interview.

After initially telling a different story, the suspect finally confessed to abusing the child. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.
