Local junior wins first in Quiz Bowl

Matthew Hughes, an Ypsilanti High School junior, was part of a four-person team that won first place in the Japanese Quiz Bowl, hosted March 15 on the University of Michigan campus.

There were more than 100 teams competing in four categories, with division four being the toughest competition.
Matthew's team, made up of two students from Pioneer High School and one from Community High School, took top honors in division four.
Matthew is dual enrolled at Eastern Michigan University where he takes a course in Japanese studies and he also receives private lessons in Japanese language use. His ambition, upon graduation from Ypsilanti High School, is to study in Japan.
