Police Blotter

PUBLISHED: March 20, 2008

Ypsilanti police officers Andrew Vainner and Brent Yuchasz were on patrol at 8:20 p.m. last Thursday when they observed a vehicle going northbound on First Avenue at a high rate of speed with its license plate obscured.

After pursuing the vehicle as it turned left onto West Michigan Avenue, the officers were able to get the vehicle to slow down in the area of the intersection with Mansfield Street. The car continued to roll slowly westbound until the officers activated the sirens on the patrol car, though. The suspect vehicle finally stopped in the area of Meadow Woods Boulevard and West Michigan Avenue.

The male driver was found to have an expired license and was in possession of a small amount of cocaine. There were also two beer bottles open in the vehicle.

His female passenger was found to be in possession of heroin, the prescription drug Xanax, and Suboxone, a morphine substitute. Both people were arrested.

The Ypsilanti police neighborhood Policing Team of Bradley Compton and Zachary Allen made a traffic stop at 7:49 p.m. last Friday in the 300 block of Second Avenue. The vehicle had an expired license plate.

The female driver pulled into a driveway and exited the vehicle to talk with the officers. She was found to have a Michigan identification card, but no driver's license.

The woman gave permission for the officers to search her person and her vehicle, adding, "I think I have a pill in my pocket."

When asked what kind of pill the woman said it was Ecstasy. The officers found a baggie with blue powder in her pants' pocket and the woman expressed disappointment at having "crushed the pill."

The officers also found a baggie in the glove compartment of the vehicle that contained two unmarked green and white capsules. The capsules were found to hold a tan powder.

The woman said the capsules were her mother's, for whom she was running errands. The tan powder field-tested positive for heroin. The woman was arrested.

Ypsilanti police were called at 12:30 a.m. last Sunday to the 700 block of Green Road on a report of a felonious assault, possibly involving a gun.

The female victim, 19, said she had been attending a party and became involved in an argument with the suspect outside the party. The victim stated the altercation turned into a physical fight between her and suspect, during which he made references to getting a weapon.

The victim stated she returned to the party. Shortly afterwards, the suspect appeared, brandishing a rifle. The victim stated the suspect then pointed and threatened her with the gun.

The officers went to the suspect's apartment, which was in the same building as the party, and were granted entry. The suspect also consented to a search.

The officer located a loaded 9 mm rifle. The suspect was arrested for felonious assault and lodged at the Washtenaw County jail pending arraignment.

Shot or not?

Ypsilanti police were called at 1:13 a.m. last Monday to a location in Ypsilanti Township to take a report of possible shots fired in the area of Maus Street and South Prospect Street in the city.

The victim said she had been driving when she heard a loud noise, followed immediately by the shattering of the rear driver's side window in her vehicle. She had driven home to call police.

Officers searched her vehicle, but could find neither an exit for the bullet nor the alleged round itself. There were also no reports of shots fired in the area at which the victim said the alleged shot had occurred.
