Braves junior Greg Eggbert (119 pounds) stole the show, finishing in third place among all wrestlers in the 97,990-square-mile area of Michigan.
After dropping the opening match, Eggbert rattled off five consecutive victories. He beat Anthony Lee of Fowlerville in a fall at 4 minutes, 29 seconds; Dustin Anger of Flint-Kearsley in a 9-7 decision; Steve Poffenberger of Allegan in an 8-1 decision; Chris Cavins of Carleton Airport in a 5-3 overtime decision; and Ben Simons-Scalise of Mount Pleasant in a 12-0 major decision to claim the third-place prize.
"(He) pretty much dominated all the way through," Braves head coach Claudell Ruffin said.
In the victory against Cavins, Ruffin said his junior wrestler "got a little revenge" after dropping a 7-3 decision in the semifinals of districts to the Airport grappler.
It was a different result this time around for Eggbert, since he stayed disciplined, protected his legs, took his time and executed his moves to knock off Cavins in overtime, Ruffin said.
Meanwhile, senior Chris Harris (135 pounds) finished in fourth place and Alonzo Richardson (152 pounds) was one match away from placing.
Harris defeated Tim Gingerich, of Lowell, in a 10–7 decision, then lost to Zach Carr, of Mt. Pleasant, in a fall at 4 minutes 48 seconds, and then defeated Sean Bagby, of Tecumseh, in a 6–3 decision.
As a result, Harris was slotted to face Carr once again, this time for the right to take home the third-place prize. But Carr defeated Harris in a 7–5 decision, sending the Ypsilanti grappler home with a fourth-place finish.
"He had a good shot," Ruffin said about Harris. "That's how it goes sometimes."
Richardson defeated Travis Wade, of Fenton, in a 12–10 decision for his lone victory, finishing the day at 1– 2.
Ruffin was pleased with the effort of his three grapplers.
"(It's) definitely tough to win at that level," he said. "All three of them wrestled tough. That's all you can ask for.
"They definitely peaked at the right time."
