Egbert falls victim to late stalling

The first day of the Division 2 state wrestling finals didn't go quite the way that Ypsilanti High's Greg Egbert would have liked it. The one hundred and nineteen pound senior came into state tournament with a perfect 49-0 record.

In the first match of the tournament he came away with what he thought was a 6-4 win in overtime. The only problem with that was about 25 minutes after the match, his Coach Claudell Ruffin was called to the head table and told his wrestler had lost the match before it went to overtime.
Apparently the score was 4-3 in favor of Egbert in the third period when he was called for his second stalling of the match. This is a two-point penalty for the other wrestler and they mistakenly gave that wrestler only one point.
As one can imagine Egbert was crushed by the ruling and sent into the loser's bracket of the tournament for the second straight year.
"As the coach I was the one who had to tell him," Ruffin. "It was tough and he didn't want to wrestle anymore."
It turned out that Egbert came back and finished 5-2 at the tournament to take fifth place. His only other loss was to Dexter's Bret Marsh on a 4-1 decision. In that match Egbert took him down two times but couldn't turn him.
Egbert finishes his senior year with a 54-2 record (both loses at the state meet) and a career with over 180 wins and around 15 losses.
Senior Ben Hand (171) also earned all-state honors with a 2-2 record at the state meet. He lost to the eventual state champ in the semifinals and his other loss was to the state champ from the previous year.
"The kids wrestled hard," Ruffin said. "It is a good thing to get two all staters. That is what we had last year."
Ruffin said it will be tough to replace his seniors but he is looking for good things from his young wrestlers and is very excited about the future of the Ypsilanti High wrestling program.
