District installs AEDs at schools
PUBLISHED: March 13, 2008
Ypsilanti Public Schools has completed the process of securing Automated External Defibrillators for every school in the district. The portable electronic devices are used in emergency situations to re-establish a normal heart rhythm. The simplistic application is designed so that almost anyone can use the mechanism.

Each AED costs approximately $1,800 and most of the funds for the purchase of the 11 AEDs were donated. Sessions are now being scheduled to teach staff CPR and the proper procedure for using the AEDs
Installing AEDs in all schools was prompted following the 2006 death of Kayla Stanford, an YPS middle school student who collapsed following an athletic practice. Three of the AEDs were purchased in her memory. Other AED donors are: The Kimberly Anne Gillary Foundation, Visteon Corp., Thoracic and Cardiovascular Healthcare Foundation, The YHS senior class of 2006 and several Parent/Teacher school organizations.
Kelly Stanford, Kayla's mother, has been actively involved in promoting free heart screening events and the importance of having AEDs in schools. These screenings offer tests that go beyond the typical health physicals required for participation in school athletics and can detect heart irregularities that can possibly save lives. A free heart screening for local high school student athletes is scheduled 8 a.m.-1 p.m. March 8, 2008 at the professional building at Chelsea Community Hospital, 775 S. Main St., Chelsea. To register, call (800) 633-7377. More information is available at www.cch.org.
