Michael Johnston, 46, with Sakstrup's Towing Service was assisting the State Police with a traffic crash on westbound I-94 at the end of the ramp from southbound US-23 when an intoxicated driver struck him.
The suspect's vehicle was crossing from the right lane, through flare patterns set up by the State Police, when it struck the tow truck and Johnston.
Michigan State Police Sgt. Chris Pascoe said Johnston, of Ann Arbor, was removing a wrecked vehicle from the right ditch in a separate drunk driving incident when he was struck.
"Everybody's pretty shook up about it," Sgt. Pascoe said of the officers. "We work pretty closely with the tow truck drivers."
Dennis Brewer, owner of Sakstrup's, said Johnston was great to work with and was always ready and willing to help people in need.
"He was a great asset to our company," Brewer said of Johnston. "He will truly be missed."
The suspect driver is a 60-year-old man from Ann Arbor. He is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail pending arraignment scheduled Tuesday afternoon.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church 530 Elizabeth St., Ann Arbor.
