On Thursday, the two teams will face off once again, this time in the opening round of district play.
"This is it," Ypsilanti coach Steve Brooks said. "We know why and how (Romulus) beat us. It's nothing that can't be corrected."
In the 12-point loss, Brooks blamed poor defense and said that Ypsilanti gave up four "leak outs," to Romulus' Devin Searcy, which led to four easy baskets and eight points.
Those easy baskets, Brooks said, are things that can easily be avoided.
Brooks doesn't believe Romulus coach Nate Oats will be as risky in the district game, and said it will come down to a battle in the half court.
"I'm real confident," Brooks said. "I really like our chances in the half court, because we usually defend pretty good. I don't think they're going to launch as many threes."
On Feb. 27, senior guard L.J. Frazier sank two clutch free throws with four seconds remaining in regulation to give Ypsilanti a 65 – 63 victory over Taylor Truman.
With the win, Ypsilanti clinched a share of the Mega Red title.
A win against Romulus Friday would have resulted in an outright title but since Ypsilanti fell short, the Mega Red crown is shared by Truman, Romulus and Ypsilanti; teams that all finished 9–3 in the division.
"I'm real satisfied with my kids, because we weren't supposed to be there," said Brooks, noting that Romulus and Truman were picked to win the Red division.
"By us being able to get a share of the title, I'm real satisfied with my kids."
With a win against Romulus, Ypsilanti will face the winner of Wayne Memorial and Belleville 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals. A victory in the semifinals would advance Ypsilanti to the district finals Saturday.
Brooks said he's confident in his team's chances to advance beyond the first round.
