U.S. Rep. John Dingell and state State Rep. Alma Smith, D-54th District, will celebrate the first birthday of the Washtenaw Youth Mentoring Coalition during the sixth annual Walk and Roll Expo 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 17 at Eastern Michigan University's Bowen Field House.

Proceeds from the Expo will benefit the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living, a coalition-member organization that serves local people with disabilities.
The Ann Arbor-based independent living center's annual fundraiser also is an opportunity to celebrate local mentoring success, to encourage local residents to volunteer and to raise funds for local youth programs.
"My experience of mentoring has been great, and it has also helped me become a better person," said Daniil Gunitskiy, who serves as a mentor to a youth through the Hikone Community Center's Community Action Network.
"I always look forward to our weekly meetings and I hope it is something that continues for years to come."
Michigan First Gentleman Dan Mulhern presented awards for mentoring, in January, to one of five local mentors including Gunitskiy
The Walk and Roll Expo focuses on participants who walk, bike, roller blade, or use a scooter or wheelchair to roll around Bowen's indoor track for prizes, exercise and fun.
Walk and Roll is a family event with a DJ, free food, and a children's area featuring arts and crafts and games. Participants will also enjoy live music, Irish dance and a demonstration of handcycles; bicycles powered by arm rather than leg movement.
Each participant is encouraged to raise $50 in donations.
The Washtenaw Youth Mentoring Coalition is an alliance of more than 20 youth-focused organizations, including schools, non-profits, government agencies and faith-based organizations.
