Dowdy, who was contracted to the district through his company, A. Grant Associates, had seen his contract renewed last summer. He had been a stalwart for the district for many years.
According to David Bates, president of the Ypsilanti district's Board of Education, Dowdy had been recently sent a notice that he was being considered for termination for not performing his duties.
Dowdy had experienced health problems in recent months. Last summer, he experienced a fall that resulted in a closed head injury from which he suffered lasting effects.
He first came to the district in 1992 and served until 2000, when he left to take a position in Oakland County. He returned in 2002 after his successor resigned and added the designation of deputy superintendent to his titles at that time.
Earlier in his career, Dowdy worked for the Willow Run Community School District and settled in the area. Even during his tenure in Oakland County, he continued to reside in the Ypsilanti area.
Hawkins, in his remarks, said Dowdy has been "one of the finest financial minds in the business."
He added that he felt Dowdy and he had "made a great team" and noted Dowdy's dedicated service and contributions to the community over the years.
Dowdy's duties are currently being performed by his office staff, led by manager Kelli Glenn. Plans to fill the position have yet to be decided.
