PUBLISHED: March 1, 2007

Law enforcement personnel Feb. 22 arrested an Ypsilanti resident for allegedly using the Internet to proposition a minor and transmit sexually explicit material.

Orin Andrew Kennedy, a 27-year-old English teacher, is now lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail after being arraigned on one count of using a computer to accost and solicit a minor for immoral purposes, a 10-year-felony charge, and one count of using a computer to disseminate sexually explicit matter to a minor, a four-year felony charge, according to press release from Attorney General Mike Cox's office.

The defendant is alleged to have been chatting on-line with an undercover agent whom he thought was a 14-year-old girl. He allegedly engaged in graphic sexual conversation and propositioned the agent to watch a sexually explicit act. Kennedy was arrested at his home on Lakeside Drive where investigators seized a laptop computer and web cam from the man's home.

Kennedy is employed by the Canton-Plymouth School District.

"Predators continue to lurk on the Internet, trying to approach minors," Cox said. "My office will not let up in its pursuit to track down and prosecute these predators who seek to harm Michigan's children."

District Magistrate Camille Horne set the defendant's bond at $50,000 or 10 percent surety, with stipulations that the defendant have no computer or Internet usage if released.

Kennedy's preliminary exam is scheduled at 1 p.m. March 14.

Cox advised local parents t check their children's "buddy lists" for the on-line screen name that Kennedy used, "oxyd69."

Any parents who believe their child had contact, over the Internet, with Kennedy should contact the Attorney General's Office at 1-313-456-0180.

Since its restructuring, the state's Child and Public Protection Unit has arrested 122 Internet sexual predators. The Attorney General encourages parents to visit www.michigan.gov/ag for tips on safe Internet use for kids.

Citizens can also report suspected Internet child predators through the Report Internet Abuses Against Children link on the Web site, or by calling the Child and Public Protection Unit at 1-313-456-0180.
