Orange Amir Taylor III was arrested Friday at his Southfield home, charged with the death of Laura Dickinson, 22. Dickinson's body was found in her dormitory room on the Eastern Michigan campus Dec. 15.
Taylor, who did not live on campus, has also been charged with home invasion and larceny.
He is being held without bond in the Washtenaw County Jail.
Taylor was one of several suspects whose image was captured by a surveillance camera at the dormitory. Officials said his DNA was matched to that found at the scene.
Until Friday, even Dickinson's parents were unaware her death was being investigated as a homicide, police said.
Officials said they kept the investigation quiet out of concern the suspect would flee.
