The final week of the regular season proved to be not so kind for the Willow Run Flyers. In fact, the locals went 0-3 on the week and finished the regular season 6-14 overall and 2-10 in the Mega Red.
In a non-league battle on Feb. 18 the Flyers fell 54-40 to the Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology. In the first quarter it was tied 10-10 and at the half ABT led 29-10.
"We played careless basketball," Willow Run Coach Scott Hunter said. "Their defensive pressure in the second quarter hurt us."
Mark Cook had 17 points in the loss.
On Tuesday the Ypsilanti Phoenix narrowly edged Willow Run 46-44 in overtime.
It was a tight game most of the way with Ypsilanti having to make a comeback at the end in order to force overtime.
"They were up six at the beginning of the fourth and we had to come from behind," Phoenix Coach Steve Brooks said. "Brian Walker hit a shot to tie it and send it to overtime."
Brooks said the Flyers played them in a zone for the entire game and it caused them some problems.
Ypsilanti managed four points in overtime and Willow Run only had two points.
Marvon Sanders led the locals with 13 points. Connor Heine had 10 points and Torren Burns chipped in with nine points. Brian Cogdell led the Flyers with 19 points.
Hunter said his team was up at the end but couldn't put the game away.
On Friday the Flyers fell 49-38 to Taylor Truman. It was tied at the half 15-15. In the third Truman hit some threes and played zone outscoring the Flyers 17-18.
Cook and Cogdell each had 15 points in the loss to the Cougars.
Lincoln girls hoops
The good news is that the Ypsilanti Lincoln Lady Splitters' basketball team equaled last season's win mark this year. The bad news is the team bowed out of the state playoffs with a 1-20 mark on the season.
On Feb. 18 the locals fell to Bedford 60-30 in the first round of Class A district action. The score at the half was 34-17 in favor of the Mules.
Lincoln Coach Johnny Epps was more impressed with this effort than the previous two losses the team had posted against Bedford.
"This is the third time we played them," Epps said. "We played much better this time."
Crystal Washington led the team in scoring with 16 points. Lincoln will graduate six seniors including one starter and will look for held from the junior varsity.
