With Honors RCTC technology students sweep regional competition

By Kathleen Conat, Special Writer

PUBLISHED: February 28, 2008

Students from the Computer Systems Technologies class of the Regional Career Technical Center took five of the six top places in this year's regional competition of SkillsUSA held at Ypsilanti High School last week.

First place was awarded to Brian Richards from Lincoln High School. Second place went to Travis McCurdy of Ypsilanti High School and third place was captured by Donovan Moore of Lincoln. Fifth and sixth places went to D.J. Reed and Scott Elwell, both from Ypsilanti.

Fourth place was awarded to James Perry of Oakland Schools, who will now join the RCTC team to represent the region at the state competition.

The competition involved answering a list of 100 questions about the hardware of computers.

In addition, hands-on diagnosis of problems was required. Competitors had five minutes at each of eight stations that held a computer with a problem. They had to both diagnose the problem and come up with a solution for it.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. The nonprofit organization sponsors competitions at regional, state and national levels.

As the RCTC team won last year, it hosted this year's event. Competitors from Livingston, Oakland, Wayne, Monroe and Washtenaw counties participated in the day-long event.

RCTC is a consortium made up of students from the Lincoln Consolidated, Whitmore Lake Public, Willow Run Community and Ypsilanti Public school districts.

The Computer Systems Technologies classes for RCTC are taught by Michael Mitchell.

"Mr. Mitchell has provided students with a hard and challenging work environment and made it fun to be in class," said program alumnus Steven Weber.

The results seem to speak for themselves. The team now heads for the state competition, to be held in Lansing during the third week of April.
