"We had a pretty good showing," Ypsilanti wrestling coach Claudell Ruffin said. "All the guys wrestled tough."
Four wrestlers from Ypsilanti walked out of the Mega White meet as champions, including Greg Eggbert (119 pounds), Chris Harris (135 pounds), Alonzo Richardson (152 pounds) and Ben Hand (189 pounds), who each earned first-team all-conference honors.
For Hand and Harris, the win represents back-to-back championships.
In other highlights, Patrick Hobbs (112 pounds) finished in second place, Tim Estorak (125 pounds) won fourth place, Chris Prevost, who usually wrestles in the 130 pound weight class, took fourth place at 140 pounds and Malcolm Bibbins took third place in the 285 pound heavyweight class.
"It's funny, he doesn't even weigh that much," Ruffin said about Bibbins, who actually weighs 255 to 260 pounds.
Finishing in first place at the conference meet was Lincoln Park with 206 points, followed by Ypsilanti with 148 points. Woodhaven had 137, Trenton came in with 128, Dearborn had 127.5, Redford Union secured 127, Dearborn Annapolis had 124 and Dearborn Edsel Ford finished last with just five points.
Ypsilanti is now 16-10 on the season and 4-3 in the Mega White.
"We definitely are peaking at the right time," Ruffin said. "We're just trying to keep this momentum."
Team districts were held Wednesday at Dexter, Ypsilanti received a first-round bye, meaning they faced the winner of Chelsea and Dexter in the finals.
"We get a chance to watch, and all that good stuff," Ruffin said about the battle between Chelsea and Dexter for the right to face his team.
Ruffin said the district finals were going to "be a close one," but the plan was to win a district title and go on to team regionals
Asked how his team will be able to sustain the momentum, Ruffin said the team will need to focus.
"That's the main thing the coaches have been preaching," he said. "Wrestling smart, not giving up any big points and keep their eye on the prize. Stay focused and everything will come together."
